Nds Manual3/18/2021
The 2018 NDS is referenced in the 2018 International Building Code.Significant additions to the 2018 NDS include new Roof Sheathing Ring Shank nails and fastener head pull-through design provisions to address increased wind loads in ASCE 7-16 Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures. As such, it is not appropriate to mix design values and provisions from different editions of the NDS.
The NDS Supplement contains design values for sawn lumber, structural glued laminated timber, and round timber poles and piles. Nds Manual Provides DesignThe Manual provides design information on structural applications of most wood-based products and their connections that meet the requirements of the referenced standards. Each product chapter contains information for use with this Manual and the National Design Specification (NDS) for Wood Construction. Chapters are organized to parallel the chapter format of the NDS. Solutions have been developed based on the 2015 and 2018 National Design Specification(NDS) for Wood Construction, and the 2015 Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS), as appropriate. References are also made to the 2015 and 2018 Wood Frame Construction Manual (WFCM) for One- and Two- Family Dwellings. Most of the changes in the NDS are a result of the adoption of the ASCESEI Standard 7-16 Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures which includes increased wind loads. The addition of cross-laminated timber (CLT) to AWCs National Design Specification (NDS) and upcoming changes in the 2021 International Building Code (IBC) has given engineers exciting design options never before available in US building codes and standards. New provisions were introduced for CLT connection design in the 2015 edition of the NDS and clarified in the 2018 edition. This presentation will provide background on relevant NDS provisions governing structural design of connections for CLT members, present a design example, and discuss fire protection requirements specified in NDS and AWCs newly updated Technical Report 10 Calculating the Fire Resistance of Wood Members and Assemblies (TR10). Equivalencies: 1 Hour of Instruction 0.1 Continuing Education Units (CEU) 1 Professional Development Hours (PDH) 1 Learning Units (LU). The 2018 NDS is referenced in the 2018 International Building Code and 2018 International Residential Code and used to design wood structures worldwide. The 2018 NDS references ASCESEI Standard 7-16 Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures which includes increased wind loads. Participants will learn about changes in the 2018 NDS to address increased wind loads and gain an overview of the standard.
